Mariah and DG have created a very special community where artists and art lovers and even the new shopper feel inspired and valued. And it is a great place to find gifts that are unique and local.
The Joyful Jewel is one of my favorite spots in Pittsboro, and all of Chatham County, in fact, all of the Triangle. What I love about it is the variety and beauty of so many handcrafted pieces all sourced locally in North Carolina.
Having a spot that continually changes, new pieces and artists brought in, art rearranged, always a chance to see the latest from my favorite potter, Carolyn Levy, and the several artists who work with diacritic glass... it's like a cathedral to art.
And while you're in downtown Pittsboro visiting the Joyful Jewel, take a walk up Hillsboro Street and stop in the shops, and then back down again on the other side of the street. If you love finding neat and unique things for your walls and home, you won't be disappointed.
I always find something to love here. The artwork is so unique and beautiful!
Definitely worth a drive from Durham to visit. A wide array of original art, including paintings, books, stained glass, and pottery. On top of that, the owner, Mariah, hosts poetry readings in the shop and gives impeccable customer service. It's a must to see if you're in Pittsboro. Also, next door, is a charming restaurant, Virgie's, with the best cuppa decaff I've had in ages, and chicken salad that is tender and savory. Highly recommended!
Before I moved to North Carolina I never felt I could afford original work. At the Joyful Jewel I have discovered many artists whose work absolutely delights me. If I love something and can't afford an original, I love to get cards of the originals and hang those in small frames, but at the Joyful Jewel I've been able to afford a number of original pieces of art work. Among the painters whose work I've so appreciated is Marilyn Penrod for her brilliant colors and natural settings with homes and trees; Sarah McTeer Ogburn for her enchanting paintings of women, filled with symbolism, with an oriental grace; Stacy Lewis who paints animals - real and fancied - in brilliant colors that sparkle and shine; starting from under $15 for her mini's.
Great gift shop in downtown Pittsboro.
In the afternoon the sun streams through the front wall of glass windows, through fine stained glass on the windows, and hung around the center desk and jewelry display area. It's enchanting. There are so many affordable pieces of original art, so many truly stunning pieces - whether you love brilliant color, muted colors, or natural earth colors.
